Completely Normal People

This is the digital and illustrated polish of a long forgotten side project I had envisioned, forgot about, and then rediscovered in an old sketch book from many moons ago.

The History

I was asked to prep some bios for an upcoming presentation one day, and in lieu of somebody’s actual bio I inadvertently made up my own- much to the delight of several coworkers. It dawned on me that I had done just such a thing before and I tore open some old sketch books to see if I could uncover the original idea. I remember back then I called them thumb people, and after about 10 sketch books I found them, brought them up to a decent level of polish, skinned a site template and got a 50 page book ready to go via Blurb.

The rough part of this was making all the damn sketches into drawings. Then I thought, “why not paint them? That won’t take forever”. I’m deliberately harsh on my own works and acutely aware of mistakes, both good and bad. This keeps me in check and I try not to make the same (bad) mistake twice. Let’s take improper spelling and grammar, while inking with a permanent insoluble substance, as an example. Sometimes mistakes work out well, leading to a final product that’s better than what was originally planned.
The website is a template site re-skinned and tweaked for the project. I threw in a paper texture across the board to make things look a little nicer on not-so-nice, paper. Completely Normal People hit 300 000 views on imgur and started a flame war that nobody won or cared about.
